TFS Hosts Inaugural Roundtable on Women in Film & TV Featuring The Handmaid’s Tale’s Amanda Brugel

Toronto Film School recently hosted its first-ever roundtable entitled Women in Film and TV, marking a significant milestone in the school’s ongoing commitment to supporting Canadian talent and empowering women in the screen industries.
The exclusive roundtable featured notable Toronto Film School alumni alongside Canadian Screen Award-winning actor, producer and writer, Amanda Brugel, who is best known for her roles in The Handmaid’s Tale, Dark Matter, and Kim’s Convenience, among others.

Moderated by TFS’s Writing for Film & Television Program Director Michelle Daly, the discussion delved into topics including women’s representation in the entertainment industry, navigating careers in film and television, and the unique experiences of women in the business. Daly, a seasoned producer herself, has managed the creative development and production of numerous successful CBC shows, including Schitt’s Creek, Kim’s Convenience, Baroness von Sketch Show, Workin’ Moms, Tall Boyz, andThis Hour Has 22 Minutes.

Alumni who joined the roundtable discussion alongside Brugel included:
- Christina Borgs – Class of 2018 Film Production grad: Now working in the camera department for high-profile projects, including Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein, Reacher, and Titans.
- Garima Sood – Class of 2018 Acting for Film, TV & the Theatre grad: Now working in the camera department on major projects such as Welcome to Derry, Run the ‘Burbs, and Chucky.
- Maxine Clement – Class of 2018 Writing for Film & Television grad: A talented writer and cast assistant who has worked on projects including Fubar, Sort Of, and Land Lords.
- Robyn Alomar – Class of 2017 Acting for Film, TV & the Theatre grad: Known for her starring roles in Utopia Falls, Sneakerella, and Terror Train.

The lively and engaging conversation, held in Toronto over dim sum and jasmine tea, covered a wide range of topics, from the evolving representation of women in the film and television industry to personal experiences on sets and the impact of shows like The Handmaid’s Tale. Brugel and the alumni provided valuable insights into their journeys and discussed the challenges and rewards of working in the world of film and television.
The discussion also gave a glimpse into how the participating TFS alumni have built successful careers after graduating from Toronto Film School, demonstrating the real-world success that TFS graduates are achieving in the entertainment industry.
