9 Upcoming Canadian Game Releases to Play in 2024

More creatives are producing incredible video games coast to coast than ever before. From 2017 to 2021, we’ve seen a whopping 80% increase in game studios in Canada. And yet, many gamers don’t know that talented Canadians crafted some of their favourite experiences on consoles and PC.

Tunic, Sea of Stars, and Dead Space Remake are just a few of the recent games brewed in our backyards. Our list of upcoming Canadian video games to watch in 2024 proves that this year might be one of our best.

Below, you’ll find 9 upcoming games made on home soil, along with their product pages. This year, we urge you to support Canadian video game developers. So browse our picks and make sure to add them to your wishlists!

Canadian Game Releases 2024

Star Wars Outlaws

For many Star Wars fans, an open-world action-adventure title developed by the award-winning team behind The Division series and the recent Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a dream come true. Star Wars Outlaws looks to be a fun swashbuckling sci-fi game set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, with a mix of new and familiar characters, settings, and ships.

While Swedish studio Massive Entertainment leads development, the 600+ employees of Ubisoft Toronto play a crucial role in designing the game, so we’ll give this one a pass as Canadian-made. Expect Star Wars Outlaws to release just in time for Christmas 2024.

Studio: Massive Entertainment + Ubisoft Toronto

33 Immortals

A few games have tried to bring the hectic action of 40-player MMO raids to consoles, but no developer has centred their game around the concept – until now. 33 Immortals is a cooperative action roguelike where you fight your way through hordes of enemies to reach giant multi-phase bosses.

The novelty of this one seems obvious – a 33-player roguelike – but we’re more interested in how developer Thunder Lotus ties together the narrative and progression. After all, this is the same company behind Spiritfarer, one of the most charming and touching stories in video games in recent memory.

Location: Montreal, Quebec

Release Date: TBA 2024

Times & Galaxy

Ever want to be a robot reporter on an interplanetary mystery adventure? In Times and Galaxy, you start as the first robo newsperson, but soon find yourself hunting for the big scoop, writing eye-catching stories, and doing your best to keep your job.

Edmonton’s Copychaser Games is best when they find a weird nook to play in, and like Speed Dating for Ghosts, this one seems to fit perfectly in their wheelhouse. There’s no release date yet, but the team seems pretty confident they can release Times and Galaxy in 2024.

Été

In the last few years, there’s been a swell of games designed to help you relax and Été looks to bring some new ideas to this growing subgenre. The chill soundtrack and delightful art direction help you lower your vibration as you explore a vibrant city set in an endless summer.

Game studio Impossible designed the game to mimic a painter’s creative cycle, so you’ll collect ideas from your environment and when you get home paint on canvas. You can also sell your art to your friends and decorate your studio.

Été doesn’t have a release date, but the team is looking to release the game in the latter half of the year.

Earthblade

For a lot of gamers, just saying “The next game by the studio that brought us Celeste” is enough to instantly buy on launch day. Extremely Ok Games is a darling of the indie game scene for blending tight gameplay, cute pixel art, and touching narrative.

While their next game is still tightly under wraps, we know that you play Névoa, a child of fate who returns to Earth sometime after an apocalyptic tragedy. This one looks to focus on combat more than Celeste, and it will be exciting to see this developer push into new territory. We’re really excited for this one.

BIOMORPH

BIOMORPH is a sharpy animated Metroidvania with a clever twist: you can become the creatures you kill. The hand-drawn world and interesting puzzle design add to this indie game’s charm, too.

We discovered this title during the late January Steam Quebec Fest. The story seems to revolve around the main character’s strange origins and how it relates to the world’s fallen state. Wherever the story goes, we think this one has the potential to be a surprise hit when it releases later this winter.

Studio: Lucid Dreams Studio

Location: Montreal, Quebec

Release Date: March 4, 2024

Venture to the Vile

Venture to the Vile looks to mix up some Tim Burton style into the Metroidvania subgenre. In this one, you explore the town of Rainybrook, which has been taken over by an anime simply known as the Vile.

In a recent preview, we loved the boss design, which takes a lot of inspiration from Metroid Samus Returns and other 2.5D titles. Venture into the Vile doesn’t have a release date, but it’s expected sometime in the second half of 2024.

Studio: Cut to Bits

Location: Montreal, Quebec

Release Date: TBA 2024

Nightingale

Nightingale‘s tagline dubs it a “shared world survival crafting game” but the recent trailers make it feel more like a spooky first-person version of Fortnight. Either way, the Gaslamp Fantasy world looks stunning and the card-collecting elements open up a lot of unique power crafting.

Either way, setting out with a few friends to build an outpost before taking down a giant Lovecraftian horror sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday night. Nightingale releases late February.

Studio: Inflexion Games

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Release Date: February 22, 2024

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions

Every year, a few titles appear that push the boundaries of what players consider to be a game. Goat Simulator and Untitled Goose Game come to mind, but they focus on crafting or exploring mechanics. Spirit City: Lofi Sessions, on the other hand, dubs itself a gamified focus tool. Whatever it is, this one oozes with style.

You can play lofi music, organize your space, and incorporate your real-life tasks to improve concentration and ease stress. We don’t know what that means, but if it stops us from relying on Lo-Fi Girl for 8 hours a day, then bring it on.

Studio: Mooncube Games
