English as a Second Language

We require a minimum level of English language proficiency from applicants before they can be considered for admissions into our Diploma programs.

For students who do not meet the English Language requirements, Toronto Film School offers an ESL Pathway program that helps transition students into any Toronto Film School Diploma program of their choice.

We also provide a list of other approved ESL programs that students may complete prior to being admitted at Toronto Film School.

ESL Pathway Program Entrance Requirements

  • A high school diploma from their home country.
  • The equivalent of 4.0 on the IELTS score.  Students without an IELTS score will be tested using the Oxford Online Placement Test.  Toronto Film School ESL Pathway Program covers ranges between 4.0 IELTS and 5.5 IELTS.
  • Students who secure Duolingo scores ranging from 50 to 90 would be enrolled in our ESL Pathway Program. For direct entry, the score required is 95 or higher.

Based on the results of the Oxford Online Placement Test, students are tentatively placed in Level 1 or Level 2 of the ESL Pathway Program. Students are tested again upon arrival to Canada and may be placed up or down a level depending on the results of the in-person test.

Please note:

  • If you do not have an English test score or would like to improve your English at other ESL schools, please see a list of TFS approved language schools below, along with a standard list of recognized language proficiency tests and minimum scores.
  • If you have successfully studied for three years in an English speaking country, you do not need to submit ESL test results.
  • If you have studied in English for at least two years at a recognized college or have successfully completed one year of study at a recognized university or a one-year post graduate certificate at a recognized college, you do not need to submit ESL test results.
