Toronto Film School to Host Schitt’s Creek Star Annie Murphy During Upcoming ‘In Conversation’ Event
Attention Schittheads: The upcoming instalment of Toronto Film School’s speaker series, In Conversation, promises to feature plenty of behind-the-scenes insights from the set of the Emmy-winning Schitt’s Creek.
The online event will serve as a mini reunion between Annie Murphy, who rose to fame during her six-season stint playing riches-to-rags socialite Alexis Rose on the CBC/Netflix smash-hit comedy, and Toronto Film School’s Executive Producer in Residence and In Conversation co-host Andrew Barnsley, who served as one of the show’s executive producers.
An Ottawa native, Murphy joins an ever-expanding list of esteemed Canadian actors, writers and filmmakers to engage with the Toronto Film School community since the launch of our In Conversation events back in April.
The Canadian Screen Award-winning actor – who will next star in AMC’s upcoming Kevin Can F*** Himself – will join the Thursday, July 23 instalment of the speaker series on Thursday, July 23 via Zoom.
Hosted by Barnsley and Writing for Film & TV Program Director Adam Till, the 90-minute, interview-style discussions typically cover the entire span of our guest speakers’ careers.
Previous guests have included Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan, 30-year veteran stand-up comedian Caroline Rhea, Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated writer and actor Nia Vardalos, Beverly Hills 90210 star Jason Priestley, and the Emmy-winning star of Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany.

About Annie Murphy
Annie Murphy starred in the Emmy-nominated Schitt’s Creek for six seasons (2015-2020) alongside Eugene Levy, Daniel Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Chris Elliott as Alexis Rose, the daughter of Eugene Levy and O’Hara. Murphy was first nominated in 2016 for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Actress in a Comedy for her work on the series. She is now a four-time CSA nominee (2016/2018/2019/2020); a recipient of a Gracie Award for Actress in a Breakthrough Role in 2019; and a 2020 Critics’ Choice nominee. Her performance has been hailed by critics as “breakthrough” and “more than just good acting, it’s a freakin’ magic trick”. Buzzfeed ranked her performance as the most “criminally underrated of the 2010s”.
Murphy’s currently plays the lead in AMC’s Kevin Can F*** Himself, an hour-long dark comedy that deconstructs the role of the passive, agreeable sitcom wife. The series was created by Valerie Armstrong (Lodge 49), executive produced by Rashida Jones and her writing partner Will McCormack, and will be run by Craig DiGregorio (Shrill). Kevin Can F*** Himself begins shooting this fall.
Murphy wrote, produced, and acted in The Plateaus, a CBC web series, which also features Elisha Cuthbert and Jay Baruchel. She is a graduate of both the Canadian Film Centre Actors’ Conservatory and the Theatre Performance Program at Concordia University. She was born in Ottawa, Canada.
Past projects include Rookie Blue, Flashpoint, Good God, The Story of Jen, and Blue Mountain State in addition to a number of live stage productions in Toronto and Montreal.
Murphy is a CARE Canada Ambassador and travelled to Jordan in September 2019 to highlight the issues women, girls, and Syrian refugees are facing.
