Mental Health & Wellness Team Launches Peer-to-Peer Support Sessions

Toronto Film School’s Mental Health and Wellness team have launched a series of bi-monthly Peer-to-Peer Support Group sessions, all aimed at helping students build the coping skills they need to succeed.

Clinically led by TFS’s Mental Health and Wellness counsellors, the hourlong Zoom sessions will tackle different topics of interest each month – from stress management and conflict resolution, to resilience and self care, to perfectionism and imposter syndrome.

“Essentially what we did was we took what we felt were the biggest concerns that we were seeing in our student population, and we designed these sessions to help any students that are looking to build some of these skills in their personal and professional selves,” said Jodie Lockey-Duesling, Director of Mental Health & Wellness.

“Our goal is for students to experience personal growth, and along with that also comes academic achievement and connectedness within your school.”

Described by Lockey-Duesling as “psychoeducational” in nature, the online format of the sessions also allow participating students to engage as much, or as little, as they feel comfortable.

“The format will be similar to Zoom meetings or classes, where there’s a bit of interactive work, a little bit of their own reflection time, then some educational pieces,” she said of the sessions, noting that all are delivered with inclusivity and cultural competence top of mind.

“I truly believe in trying to reduce as many barriers as I can, so we really live by the idea of ‘come as you are,” so students can participate as little or as much as they want. Some might not want to put their cameras on right away or participate as much as others, and that’s okay. There’s no pressure.”
