New Grad to Show Collection at |FAT| Arts & Fashion Week

Sandra Al-Dabbagh hasn’t even attended convocation yet and already the Toronto Film School Fashion Design graduate has landed a show in Toronto’s |FAT| Arts & Fashion Week.

“It is absolutely surreal that my very first collection was accepted into FAT,” Al-Dabbagh said. “It has been a crazy, fascinating, and rewarding experience to be a part of it.”

FAT is an annual multi-arts event that features 200 national and international fashion designers, visual artists and performers. It runs from April 21 to 25.

Sandra will show her collection Artematics, which she created while at the Toronto Film School.

“I hope my collection inspires all the graduates and those starting out in the industry like myself,” Sandra said. “I work full time and have somehow managed to pull this off on my own! With the love and passion for this industry, you do not need to be an established, recognized designer to create something beautiful and inspiring. It all begins somewhere, and FAT has given me this amazing opportunity to launch my line.”

Sandra said her collection is inspired by mathematics – 3D calculus functions, fractal art, harmonographs, and mathematical symbols.

“As I studied engineering before I went into fashion, I thought it would be fun and quirky to create my first collection using elements from my previous studies to create artistic design details,” she said. “In this collection, I created my own prints and experimented with fabric manipulations.”

Sandra started this collection in July 2014 and completed it in three months during her 5th term at Toronto Film School.

“I have to thank Toronto Film School for constantly pushing me to produce a collection that I would be proud to present as my graduating collection,” Sandra said.

After she was accepted into FAT, Sandra said she worked feverishly for the last month and a half to add to her collection for a total of 10 looks, on top of meeting with models, stylist, and prepping for music, hair, and make up for the show.

Sandra’s Show takes place at 8:50 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 at Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas St. E.
