Andrew Barnsley’s Schitt’s Creek Team Scores 15 Emmy Nods

Toronto Film School’s Andrew Barnsley just scored his second Outstanding Comedy Emmy nomination for Schitt’s Creek – just one of 15 Emmy nods the CBC hit series garnered for its sixth and final season.

“It’s phenomenal to think about these 15 nominations – and in so many different categories. It’s such a testament to the team and what we can do together,” Barnsley, an executive producer on the show, said of Schitt’s Creek’s 2020 Emmy nomination haul.

“We knew there was buzz around some categories, but to get 15 and to get them in categories like writing and directing, and in virtually all the acting categories, and in the craft categories like casting and make-up and wardrobe – it just shows that this was a series firing on all cylinders.”

The show’s entire main cast swept the comedy acting categories, with stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara each receiving nominations for their leading roles as the formerly affluent Johnny and Moira Rose, and co-stars Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy, who play their riches-to-rags children David and Alexis, securing supporting acting nods.

Daniel Levy, who co-created the show with dad Eugene, is also vying for Emmys in the comedy writing and directing categories for the series’ final episode, Happy Ending.

As executive producer of Schitt’s Creek, Barnsley is named amongst the Outstanding Comedy Series nominees – the second time his name has appeared on the Emmy ballot in that category in as many years.

“You dream about this. These are your wildest dreams when you start careers like this, so to have achieved this level of recognition two years in a row, it’s hard to put into words,” said Barnsley, who also serves as Toronto Film School’s Executive Producer in Residence.

“You go into this kind of career because you want to tell stories, you want to connect with people, you want to bring laughter to the world. You don’t go into it for the awards, because they’re just so elusive.”

So, to have garnered so much praise from the Emmys – the gold standard of excellence in television – for Schitt’s Creek’s sixth and final season, Barnsley said, only helps the show bid adieu on the highest note possible.

“To go out like this and to get this global recognition – it is really beyond words,” he said.

“What a way to wrap it all up!”
